Testing out Flavored Kit-Kats from Japan
My roommate just came back from Tokyo, Japan with some goodies — an assorted collection of flavored Kit Kats. According to AdAge, “Kit Kat” translates to “kitto katsu” which is a Japanese expression meaning good luck. Baked Potato, Soy Sauce and Fruit Parfait are just some of the flavored Kit Kats you can find in Tokyo.
Here in the good ole U.S. of A we are not blessed with the strange flavors they are packing in Japan! I am not quite sure how they achieve these acentric flavors. It seems like they must be pumped with artificial chemicals, but in reference to my last blog, that doesn’t seem to bother me much. Maybe they are coated in white chocolate with flavoring? We don’t really know for sure. Don’t really care.
We were brought five flavors to test out- Grape, Melon and Mascarpone Cheese, Peach, Strawberry, and Uji Matcha. Here is our feedback after taste testing.
Grape: It doesn’t taste right at first. The flavor seems like it should be a gummy, so something about the crunchy texture from the Kit Kat bar doesn’t seem right. My best description of this one is grape soda flavored crackers. Even though the taste was off, we still finished it. Consensus: 1.5 out 5 stars.
Melon and Mascarpone Cheese: Smelled like Bath and Bodyworks soap. Such a weird flavor and a weird color. I personally thought it tasted like playdough. My friends thought it tasted like cantaloupe and whipped cream. 1.2 out of 5 stars.
Peach: The color just looked like white chocolate. It tastes just like peach rings. It was not my favorite flavor- a little bit too peachy. I think if they added a layer of cream between the crackers it could make for a great peaches and cream flavor. As is, 2 out of 5 stars.
Strawberry: The smell is like strawberry boxed cake mix before it is cooked or the strawberry lip smackers I had when I was five years old. It is pretty good. Melts in your mouth. Creamy with a nice fruity kick in the end. 4.5 out of 5 stars
Uji Matcha: Not extremely appealing at first. It is green with black specks and smells like dirt or a stinky tea bag. It tasted like unsweetened tea in a candy — so weird. Basically, a creamy version of tea if you’re into that. I am not a fan of matcha, so I may be biased giving out this score but, 1 out of 5 stars.
After the test, my favorite flavor was the strawberry. The matcha was my least favorite. Overall consensus… America needs to step up its game!
