Chick-fil-a Sauces: Worst to Best

My roommates and I love Chick-fil-a. It is rare to go in my house and not find at least one empty Chick-fil-a cup sitting in a room. As I type, there are two large Styrofoam cups that were once filled with Chick-fil-a’s divine pellet ice and tea siting in our living room.

It’s the obvious choice for lunch or dinner because it’s cheap and it’s so, so good. The best part is that you can eat a completely different dinner based on the 7 sauces Chick-fil-a has to offer. One meal you can be chilling seaside at a Polynesian resort and the other meal your kicking it down south at your neighborhood barbeque.

My pallet typically mimics that of a 4th grader. I am the loser who orders grilled cheese and chicken fingers at a restaurant. I know, the worst. But I can’t really help it. I think my taste buds just work too well. They are hypersensitive to unknown flavors.

But recently, I’ve been doing something out of the ordinary… ordering new sauces each visit to Chick-fil-a. I think it has to do with dying taste buds. (Fun fact: my 5th grade science fair project was about taste buds. I learned they die off as you get older. Maybe by the time we are senior citizens we will be able to eat feces and not bat an eye. Only time will tell).

After some postulating and data examining, I have reached a conclusion about Chick-fil-a’s array of sauces. Here they are ranked from worst to best:

# 6. Honey Mustard – This is my fair warning to you. Chick-fil-a’s honey mustard is the nastiest thing I’ve ever tasted. The color is also horrible. It is straight up neon green. I’m usually not always mustard’s #1 fan, but I can usually get down with the tanginess when you throw some honey in the mix. The color alone is reason enough not to eat this sauce, but the flavor is just simply subpar.

# 5. Barbecue – I am not a fan of barbecue sauce when paired with fried chicken. There is something about the two that just don’t click in my brain. I think a rule of thumb is to stick to pork when it comes to barbeque. I’ll save this sauce for the next time I eat a pulled pork sandwich, but not for anything offered on the Chick-fil-a menu.

# 4. Sweet and Spicy Sriracha – I was recently introduced to this sauce, and I’m not gonna lie, its realllyyy good. This one has the chance to ascend in my rankings after a few more tastes. The reason why it is #4 is due to the fact that it is a bit spicy. I am a huge wuss when it comes to spice. If you’re like me, I’d recommend a large half sweet half unsweet tea while gulping this fire sauce down the guzzlette.

# 3. Buffalo/Ranch – Even though these sauces are two separate items, I think it’s imperative they be paired together. The ranch is decent, but I think dipping nuggets into ranch alone is a travesty and anyone who does so should be institutionalized. The buffalo sauce is amazing, but as stated above, Hayley and spice are like oil and vinegar… we don’t mix. The ranch is the perfect accent to the buffalo to help tame its kick. This pair is a match made in heaven.

# 2. Polynesian – I would have said Polynesian was my top pick before branching out as of this year. I almost feel like I’m cheating. The sweet and tangy flavors make this sauce almost unbeatable. You cannot go wrong with this sauce right here.

# 1. Chick-fil-a Sauce – This mystery sauce has it all. The smokiness of barbeque sauce, the tanginess of Polynesian, and the sweetness of the honey mustard. This sauce gets its name for pairing perfectly with Chick-fil-a chicken. Even if I don’t get this sauce for my chicken, I always end up getting some for my fries.  Remarkable recipe. I have no other words. GO TRY IT FOR YOURSELF!
